Nursery and Primary School Applications in Northern Ireland: Common Misconceptions Explained
Nursery and Primary 1 school applications in Northern Ireland open today, and for many parents this can feel like a stressful and confusing time. Each year, the same worries and myths resurface, often shared with the best of intentions — but not always with accurate information.
To help parents feel more confident, we’ve pulled together some of the most common misconceptions about the admissions process and explained what actually happens.
Misconception 1: “You must submit your application on the day the portal opens to have a good chance.”
This is one of the most common worries — and thankfully, it isn’t true.
While the admissions portal opens today, it will remain open until 21 January. Schools do not begin processing applications as they come in. Instead, they only start reviewing applications after the closing date, once all submissions are in.
This means there is no advantage to applying on day one. Parents should take the time they need to carefully consider preferences, check supporting documents, and ensure all information is correct before submitting.
Misconception 2: “Putting only one school down helps your chances.”
It’s understandable to think that naming just one school shows commitment, but this approach can actually limit your child’s chances.
Many schools do give priority to children who list them as their first preference, but if that school is oversubscribed and no other preferences are listed, your child may be allocated a place elsewhere with little choice involved.
It is strongly recommended that parents rank multiple schools in genuine order of preference. This doesn’t reduce your chances for your first-choice school, it simply provides a safety net if that school is oversubscribed.
Misconception 3: “My child already attends the nursery at the school, so they will automatically get a P1 place.”
A nursery place does not guarantee a Primary 1 place at the same school.
Even if your child attends a nursery unit attached to the primary school, you must still submit a Primary 1 application through the admissions process. Nursery and primary admissions are treated as separate processes, and progression is not automatic.
Failing to apply could mean missing out on a place altogether, so it’s essential that parents complete the application even if they feel their child is already “in the system”.
Misconception 4: “I need to apply through the EA admissions portal for my child who has a statement of SEN.”
Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN) follow a different process.
Placement for these children is discussed as part of their annual review, in consultation with parents, the school SENCo, and the Education Authority. In most cases, parents do not apply through the standard EA admissions portal for nursery or Primary 1 places.
If your child has a statement of SEN and you are unsure about the process, it’s important to speak directly with your child’s school or SENCo for guidance specific to your child’s situation.
Be Reassured
The admissions process can feel daunting, particularly if it’s your first time applying for a school place. However, there is time to make informed decisions, and help is available if you need it.
Take a breath, read the guidance carefully, and remember that one application does not define your child’s future. If you’re unsure, seek advice early rather than rushing through the process.
